Title: Ghaznavids short of Elephants?
Post by: john_dbmm on July 19, 2009, 03:23:23 PM
Im a bit curios, isnt the maxima 5 a bit low? This considering that 1600+ battleready elephants once where available to the Ghasnavids? the Seleucids hava a maxima of 8 and if a recall correctly they "just" had about 600 battleready at that time.

The Ghaznavids can have up to 8 nellies, actually (incl generals).

That said, I disclaim all knowledge of how many nellies they ought get.

The lists try to build representative armies.  The Ghaznavids had lots of elephants (in different places) but never fielded huge numbers together in a single field battle.  5 plus 3 gens is a lot oh elephants by DBMM list standards.

C E Bosworth's two books are still the best (the first edn of the first one is 46 years old now!).  Out of print, but good libraries should be able to get them.

The Ghaznavids: Their empire in Afghanistan and Eastern Iran, 994-1040
Later Ghaznavids: Splendour and Decay, the Dynasty in Afghanistan and Northern India 1040-1186
