The army list for the Vikings lists the sole allowed Wb(S) element of Berserks as costing only 3 AP instead of the usual 5 AP given in the rules book. Is this an error, or is it to make up for the solitary (and thus doomed) nature of this element of Berserks? (The impossibility of any Rear support leading to a discount.)

It is a typo. It is supposed to be Wb(S) @ 5AP.
No discount, sorry.
