Title: Easy weather questions
Post by: landmeister on September 24, 2008, 10:47:37 AM
Dear all,

I'm sure these are silly questions, but after two weeks of doubts about corner and contact moves, I prefer a second opinion  ;D

1. Does the wind (light or strong) always change direction? I can't find in the rules when change direction is applicable, so it must be from the first bound, isn't it?

2. Rain. Why combat disadvantage and close combat are separated for Bows, Shot, etc.? There is one only tactical factor applicable for "disadvantaged by weather". Where is the trap?  ;D

Thank you.

Does the wind always change direction?  Yes.  Is it relevant in non-naval combats in light winds?  Probably not.  Only the defenders PIP dice can change the wind (see top of page 25) and the change occurs after you throw your PIP dice and before you move any troops (see top of page 26, bullet point 1).  It is therefore relevant from the defenders first bound.

Hmm.  Interesting question about the wording on page 25 re Rain.  The first part refers to a combat disadvantage in rain for elements that shoot (see the first sentence under 'weather effect') and the part following the semi-colon are the situations for combat disadvantage for the same elements if in close combat.  Nice catch.  This means you definitely want to get your mounted into Bow in the rain....

Speaking of combat disadvantage for Bow in strong winds, on the weekend I missed the fact the range is reduced to 80 paces.  Not that it made any difference to any combats though....I will have to remember that one.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your help. Nonetheless, I can't understand why it couldn't be written leke: "Disadvantage for Bw, Sh, Art or WWg in close combat against mounted or shooting". Why does Phil make things so difficult?  :-[

Probably because someone would read that as meaning:

1/ Disadvantage for Bw, Sh, Art, and
2/ Disadvantage for WWg in close combat against mounted or shooting

You might not, and I wouldn't, but there are people out there who would  ....possibly innocently, possibly not.....

I see. Unfortunately, this attitude is one of the reasons for this kind of complex games are not widely welcomed in the general gamers community  :'(.
