Title: Is there interest in playing DBMM online with either Cyberboard or VassalEngine?
Post by: aka.dreadlocks on July 25, 2010, 06:31:52 PM
Is there interest in playing DBMM online with either Cyberboard or VassalEngine? I live in the USA and opponents who play DBMM are few and far between. I have to believe others are in the same boat.

The DBA module http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:De_Bellis_Vassalus (http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:De_Bellis_Vassalus) has been modified to allow a bigger "table top". Its not perfect, but I think its playable. If there is interest, I am willing to create a modified version friendlier to DBMM

Hi

at one stage there was a fair interest in playing DBM via cyberboard, eg http://dbm.freehosting.net/cyboard.htm
I'd think that the gamebox would be applicable?
Mark Wilmot was the real champion of this but his site is dead, nonetheless we now have the technology to rebuild it:

Hi

If it worked fairly smoothly I would certainly give it a go, (no idea about VASSAL though)

Cheers

Glad to hear we have some interest. I think we should ask if they will create an online opponent finder to the opponent finder section of the site.

As far as whether we should use Vassal or Cyberboard, my reason for wanting to use Vassal was that Vassal is actively being supported by a group of programmers and the De Bellis Vassalus module works in the latest version. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not believe the game boxes for DBM for Cyberboard work in the 3.0 version.

I will create a spin-off of the DBV module for Vassal. The reason being, the distance measure doesn't support the DBMM scale. Since I am not the owner of the DBV module I can not simply update and upload it because I am not the owner. Also, I think we will want additional changes over time to tailor it better to DBMM. I will post a message here when I am done.

I accept your challenge Amargo. I would like to play Early Byzantine from book 3 army 4.

What would you want an on-line opponent finder to do? Find opponents obviously... I guess geography doesn't really matter on-line, so are there any filters that people would want?

I don't think we need anything more that what you have in place for the UK or USA opponent finder, only it would be "Online" or "Vassal". Maybe "Virtual Tabletop" or just "Virtual". I think people would open a thread, give contact info and maybe the armies and time periods they are interested in.

OK - I've created a board for that.

See Online Opponent Finder for updates on Vassal module.
