Competitions / RAMPAGE 2011 - Funeral Games - SUNDAY (Tim) 26th June
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:01:19 PM »
You are cordially invited to attend the Funeral Games in honour of Alexander the Great taking place at Rampage on SUNDAY June 26th  see http://www.ilfordwargamesgroup.co.uk/

Following a years mourning armies from his Successors and their key enemies may gather for up to a generation to contest his Funeral Games and to the strongest shall go the ultimate prize.

This will be determined by the usual Rampage rules -3 games will be played on Sunday 26th June using the DBMM v2.0 rules and the appropriate DBMM army lists.

This consists of 3 games using DBMM200 rules ? armies not to exceed 240AP.
Scale 15mm ? games will last 2hrs 20mins + random time up to 12 minutes
Games will stop when time is called and then any combats are carried out.

Individual comp is 3 for a victory 1 for a draw 0 for a defeat - in event of a tie after the 3 games - most wins determines, then total 25-0 score as per the rules.  A victory is defeating more than half the opponents army.  Intention is to encourage fast play and quick decisive games. This also counts towards the Formula 1 Grand prix see http://mkws.org.uk/index.php?id=81 so form  into teams of 3 as well (here scoring will be as normal) - if you haven?t a team don?t worry we will sort something out. This is also a BHGS ranking tournament.
For the purposes of regular ally generals changing sides, no game shall be deemed a civil war.
Army lists are themed around Funeral Games and are detailed below
 Proposed timetable
 Check in 08:45
 First game 09:15
 Second game 12:15
 Third Game 15:15
 Prize giving 18:00ish

The first CORRECT army list sent to the list checker will fill the appropriate slot ? there can thus be only one.
All lists dates and hence options must be between 322 BC - 297 BC.
Lists as soon as to Les Parsons  laparsons@blueyonder.co.uk  (and before 11Th June)
All the applicable armies/slots are at the link below and this will be updated by the list checker as lists are submitted and checked.

All if you could post under this thread if you wish to attend the Challenge practice day on Friday April 3rd - If you could post as per my second post in the thread I will create a list under this post of who is playing who

In addition to DBMM games - there will also be a multiplayer FoG game and Chris Hanley shall be running his rather interesting looking Biggles Flies Undone 1/72nd scale WW1 flying game

I'll use this as a master to list games arranged - times, etc

So watch this space

Practice Day games arranged so far

Provisional pairing kick off around 10:00

Chris Hanley (arab thing) v Steve Rathgay
Tim Child (Byzantine despot) v Norman  Whapshott -

Looking for games

Adrian from around 16:00
Pete Haines from late afteroon/evening - using a different army than the comp

4
The situation as regards Book 1 and Book 4 for the Challenge are as follows

Book 4 will be the DBM v.2 Army Lists (as modified by the appendices of the DBMM
rules). only Romans (not too many of them) and Byzantines can have regular
baggage. All others converted from the DBM army list books may have irregular
(O) or (I) baggage except that armies that are completely mounted (including
mounted infantry) can have irregular (F). In accordance with the notes on p.1 of
DBMM Army Lists, allied commands of less than 10 troop elements cannot have more
than 1 baggage element.

The qualifying draft for Book 1 will be the latest DBMM draft as of 23:59 GMT on
March 18th. That gives 3 days to get the list in and Phil two weeks to wreck or
enhance lists (Sargonid and Scythian come to mind ;-)). I have left it as late
as I can to ensure we get the most up to date lists  Please do not submit any
Book 1 lists prior to that date as they may subsequently be invalid.

Phil has kindly agreed to keep a copy in the Yahoo files (see
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/DBMMlist/files/ ) and will ensure as a worst
case that the umpire/list checker will have a copy  see http://www.bhgs.co.uk/
- Challenge section for contact details.

I have already received the first list and a little beauty it is too. A well
rounded tournament tiger of a list which in skilled hands will be almost
unbeatable. Fortunately...

Remember closing date (to avoid penalties)for army lists are two weeks prior so
they need to be in on or before 21st March.

The BHGS Challenge - simply the best

Rules Questions / Feigned Flight Squared
« on: June 30, 2008, 12:57:38 PM »
One issue that arose at Rampage last weekend was regarding feigned flight

Player 1 announces a feigned flight and carries it out

Player 2 reacts to it in his bound but at the end of his bound he also initiates a feigned flight - the troops that reacted (were held or went sponno)  to the feigned flight now flee themselves .

From a rules perspective this seems Ok but historical?

There was an arguement that the only response is hold or go impetuous so you cant initiate a feigned flight but this was ruled against.

Competitions / Schiltron 2008 - Results and Report
« on: June 03, 2008, 04:35:59 PM »
Congratulations to Ian Austin on his win at Schiltron 2008 this
weekend. Great to see a local winner (it took me 5 mins to give
him a lift back on the Sunday don't get much more local than that)

This was a 15mm 400AP comp organised superbly by George Dick of the
Glasgow and District Wargames Club see http://www.gdws.co.uk/ and
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/george.dick/Schiltron/SCh%20Index.htm
for details respectively.

George stepped in at the lastminute to ensure the DBMM competition went ahead following Niall
Taylor succumbing to a late attack of thumb on foreheaditis that he
caught from his missus.

The armies/players were as follows

Ian Austin GDWS - Ugaritic
Mike Kemp Elgin - Bosporan
Neil MacCormack SEWSC (Edinburgh) - Parthian (Elymaian variant)
George Dick GDWS Seljuk Turk (Rum variant)
Gordon Harrow October (Birmingham) Middle Frankish
David Mather Pinner (North London) Hittite Empire

I believe Niall is hoping to publish the lists used by all I was
using my Hittites for the first time in over a year pretty much
the same make up as had been used at Challenge and Campaign last
year but with some more Ps (O) with the foot command as we are now
more conscious of the need to use Ps to help dictate the first clash
of foot see previous comments from Lorenzo.

First Round results

David Mather 5 Ian Austin 20
George Dick 21 Mike Kemp 4
Neil MacCormack 0 Gordon Harrow 25

My game revolved around a head on clash in the centre between the
chariot nobility with some knight on knight action and occasional
worried Cv(S) trapped in the mix which I had to initiate as my
right flank was in danger of being enveloped so I had to take the
risk of the head on clash with the big boys in the centre - Ian's
Ugaritics triumphed and that as that - the Hittites first
competitive defeat. Muwatallis was in disgrace he managed to flump
+2 BS inspired 6-0 against an Ugaritic chariot in the first major
combat - set the scene for what was to follow :-(.

Second Round

Ian Austin 11 Mike Kemp 14
David Mather 23 Neil MacCormack 2
Gordon Harrow 25 George Dick 0

Against Neils Parthians it was a case of getting my foot into his
archers - especially as they now had a new Psiloi screen - and play
hunt the cataphract with my Knights whilst delaying on the flanks
where he had a huge superiority with his light horse.
Neil "engineered" a piece of scrubby ground in the centre - Where
the bowmen will be?

The game played out pretty much as hoped with the bowmen being in
the area of the scrubby ground - the Hittite infantry advanced -
Neil correctly stepped his archers forward to ensure he got in the
shot in his bound - this was absorbed by the Psiloi - he did kill
a fair few troops in the end but once the lines closed it was
1 way traffic -2 deep Bw v Wb (F) and Pk (F) has only one winner if
they get there.

The chariot Kns made swift work of the cataphracts but Neil managed
to kill enough infantry and chariotry to get over 10% and picked up
2 points.

Third Round

Ian Austin 25 Gordon Harrow 0
David Mather 25 George Dick 0
Mike Kemp 3 Neil MacCormack 22

I must admit to being slightly worried about this game - lots of
nasty LH(S) never good for the knights or the infantry. Poor PIPs
from George allowed me to dictate things in the centre (along with
an unreliable Turcoman ally) The Seljuks lost badly in the knight
on knight action bizarrely it was the Georgian Kn(O) who lost out
the Kn(F) performed a bit better. The game ending with a Hittite
sub general Kn (O) killing a Cv (O) Seljuk general this with the
loss of the c-inc in the centre tipped the Seljuks over the edge.

Fourth Round

The situation going into the final game saw Ian in the lead with 56
me on 53 and Gordon on 50 so it was perm 1 from 3 to win.
Gordon and I were due to play with Ian playing Neils Parthians.

Given the state of play Gordon and I agreed to basically go for it -
fast play go for broke - one of us had to win big to pass Ian.

We then played out an absolute cracker
I deployed with horde lining a scrubby hill on the right with the
Gasgan and Syrian chariots behind with a centre of Hittite Kn
chariots and a couple of Cv(S) with my infantry on the left centre.

Gordons two blocks of foot were opposite my chariots/Horde with his
mass of Cv (O) opposite my foot there was a weak spot in his line
on the right as I looked at it where 4 Ps(S) stood with some Cv
behind turn that and we will get behind the foot and/or on to the
baggage. We doubled the Gasgan/Syrian dice via BS to get them as
far forward as possible to threaten his Ps flank whilst along the
front everyone moved forward. Poor pips from Gordon saw him do
nothing but move forward as well - swiftly the Gasgan chariots swept
through the Ps(S) - took them all out in one bound and piled through
onto the Cavalry who next bound they also burst through (a series of
1s from Gordon really did not help)
1 chariot broke clean through and headed for the baggage, whilst the
remainder set up mopping up the remaining Cv and making way for the
Syrian chariots to move round the flank and into the rear of the
foot block heading towards the thin horde lines defending the hill.

This poor command kept rolling ones and had to keep moving straight
forward which lead to a gap opening up between it and the central
foot block. The Frankish C-in-C moved into this gap to cover the
flank with dire consequences later on.

Meanwhile things had gone badly on the Hittite left. I had advanced
forward with the foot and retired the Ps to prepare for the charge
of the Cv (O). In my haste (we were playing at breakneck speed) I
forgot to move Muwatallis back - he had been lined up with the front
which was the Ps - DOH !!!
Gordon charged in with a double overlap, so its 3-2 to the Cv - yep
I rolled 2 Gordon rolled 6 and he made up for his 1s on the other
flank. Muwatallis was dead - first Hittite casualty of the game.
(This actually gave Gordon a prize for the fastest C-in-C kill of
the weekend) around 45 minutes into the game (inc deployment etc).

The Hittite chariots in the centre charged the block in front and
stripped away the front rank. They then began to Pacman their way
through the warband for minimal loss.

On the right the warband had reached the hill and swiftly brushed
aside the first few hordes but the Syrian chariots were now on
their flank with some moving to the rear. The Gasgan breakthrough
chariot reached the Frankish baggage behind TFs and promptly 6-1d
the baggage and broke in there. This won me the prize for
fastest baggage sack around 55 mins from start of game. So in under
an hour I am down a C-in-C and Gordons baggage is being sacked.

The next couple of bounds saw casualties climb on the Hittite foot
and them dishearten and break to the Frankish Cv. The Gasgan worked
his way through the baggage breaking it. Casualties piled up on the
Frankish warband faster than they were killing horde as the Syrians
took their toll - the early loss of the Cv and Ps hastening their
end. In the centre the warband lost heavily to the Kns the final
coup de grace coming when the Hittite Sub general killed the
Frankish C-in-C and broke the army.

In the aftermath the Hittites had lost just over 40% and had a
broken command so 16-9 to me. We played for 1hr 45 minutes. This
left us plenty of time to watch the other two games which saw a
classic bloodbath between Mike and George with Mike in the end
shading it after both armies bludgeoned each other to almost mutual
destruction 15-10 to Mike. Ian recovered from the loss of a command
to squeak home by the skin of his teeth 16-9 over Neil and take the
overall win which was only just as he had beaten both myself and
Gordon previously.

Interesting to note all the games were played to a conclusion e.g.
they were all wins even the 14-11 the winner lost over 40% and had
3 disheartened commands.

Once again an immensely enjoyable weekend of "competitive" wargaming
and a great opportunity to meet old friends (I had been a member of
GDWS) prior to my migration South back in 1985 and to meet some new
people in the form of Mike, Neil and George. Looks like there is a
thriving DBMM community in Elgin with around 5 players - Mr Taylor
take note !!! The games were all played in a great spirit and in a
very relaxed manner and the whole event ran smoothly.

So thanks again to the players and especially George for organising
hope to make it back again next year. The final results are over
on the BHGS web site see http://www.bhgs.co.uk/

Next up its Rampage at Dagenham on the 28th June where I shall be
joined by my 9 year old in his first competition game (if Toby ever
posts the details HINT).

Finally again I will encourage all those lurkers out there to come
along to a DBMM competition -

Coming up are Rampage which promises to be fast and furious, Rays
club day out at Guildford on 19th July and the one I would counsel
people to target Britcon in mid August which although a heavy 6 game
schedule will give you a great entry to the enjoyable experience
that is competition wargaming in DBMM. Both 15mm and 25mm are on
offer as ever details are over on the BHGS web site
http://www.bhgs.co.uk/ If you haven't played before don't worry
Niall Taylor had played a couple of games last year before entering
Challenge and went on to win Britcon later that year Mick Woods had
played a handful of games before Challenge this year and had a great
time. So come along and join in its fun honest.

Kind Regards

I played one game at Ladywood which was at 25/28mm at 240 AP

This was to be my 9 years old (Cameron) first major outing to the wargames scene so we were using his Alexandrian Macedonian army.

On the other side were Gordons hastily (but looking nice) put together Early Imperial Romans - we had been due to play Sues Vikings but owing to Phils illness they had been unable to make it.

Alexs army had been loosely modelled around Gaugemala and was constructed as follows

Alexander Reg Kn(F) SBW (BRILLIANT)
3 Reg Kn(F) Companions SBW
1 Prodromoi Reg LH(S)
1 Paionian Irr LH(O)
1 Agrianian Javelinman Reg Ps(S)
1 Cretan/macedonian Reg Ps(O)

Craterus ? Reg Pk(O)
4 Hypaspists Reg Pk (S)
11 Phalangites Pk(O)
4 Thracians Irr Ax(S)

Parmenion Reg Cv(O)
3 Thessalian Cav Reg Cv (O)
1 Greek  Cav Reg Cv(I)
1 Thracian Irr LH(O)
1 Greek Peltast Reg Ax(O)
1 Cretan/Macedonian Reg Ps(O)

3 x Irr Bg(O) Army Baggage

Gordons EIR

C-In-C Reg Cv(O)
12 Legionaries Reg Bd(O)

Sub Reg Cv(O)
4 Equites Reg Cv(O)
2 Numidians Irr LH(O)

Sub Reg Cv(O)
8 Auxilia Reg Ax(S)
3 Psiloi Reg Ps(O)

3 x Magic tents (although one appeared to be some Goblins in a tree ?) Reg Bg(O) Protected by TFs

The Romans invaded and the terrain was of little consequence (I didnt want much as I felt it would over complicate it and anyway the Romans operated better in rough/diff than we did)

The Macedonians deployed in fairly typical Gaugemala format with Alex on the right the phalanx in the centre (Hypaspists to the right) and Parmenion on the left with the Cavalry

The Romans deployed the Legion in the centre in 2 lines with the Cav behind in reserve and Auxilia extending the legionary line on his right
Following a brief discussion Alexander (Cameron) took Parmenions advice and allocated the dice - high Alexander, mid Parmenion, low Craterus. The game plan was to sweep forward with Alexander and swing round to force the Roman Cav to come out and counter - I felt we would break through here in the end as although we didnt have the quick kill the lack of overlapping in a even push and shove were going to tell in the end.  (Gordon had actually forgotten we didnt QK his Cav)
The Phalanx was to steam forward with its guaranteed 1 PIP and engage the legion in the classic infantry battle (we were looking to stress the corner point between the legion and the Cav reserve)

Poor old Parmenion was left with the survive long enough for the Companions and or phalanx to break through, dont lose or get killed - so fight a delaying action but make sure you support the phalanx as it goes forward instruction.

Battle duly started with good PIPs for the Macedonians - The Companions leapt forward and began to wheel to threaten the Roman left - spare PIPs being used to bring up the supporting light foot.

The Greek Cav were sent forward to slow down the Auxilia and Parmenion began to move troops out to extend the line to match as best he could the Roman Auxilia

In the centre the phalanx began to rumble forward - At this point I realised the folly of protecting its flanks with the IRREGULAR Ax(S) as we lost the sub gens PIP DoH!!!  :-[

The Romans countered by coming forward centre and their right and their Cav reserve began to respond to the Companions.

In no time at all the first battle was joined - in the centre - the phalanx charged in and despite being at good factors 5-3 and 5-2 managed to oft just 1 legionary - and being pushed back down the line - 3 1s from Cameron - was it going to be one of those games :(

I was fearful of the retribution coming - Next bound saw the Roman cav attack the Companions and the Auxila v Thessalian sniping began. As the Auxilia looked to engage and turn Parmenions flank.
Some poor rolling by Gordon saw little happen - 1 pikeman died but some holes were punched by the Macedonians - It was real heart in the mouth stuff at this point - at 240AP on a 6' x 4' its not easy to have reserves so any holes punched in lines were going to be critical.  I had visions of Alexander being dead by 11:00.

In the next bound the Roman centre and left(the Cav) began to lose badly and it was soon all over - the Companions had rolled up the Roman cav for no loss and with minimal casualties the Pike had steamrollered the Roman centre.  A 25-0 result to Alexander.

Despite there being a couple of crucial big dice swings it was a quick and enjoyable game - Gordon did take me aside at one point and pointed out I was controlling the game too much.(not like me ;))  after which we basically let Cameron make the decisions for the moves etc - explaining what choices he has and letting him decide what to do - I must admit that worked very well.  Cameron was picking the factors Ok from the QRS and was confident in working out the base combats plus overlaps and had quickly grasped the importance of the overlap.  He really, really likes the Companions.
In the afternoon I elected to observe the other games and Cameron played 15mm with Gordon using Middle Frankish against Ray Briggs and his Western han -in what was a bloody draw.

For any other Dads out there - this was a really good day - Cameron thoughlly enjoyed himself and is keen to play again and the 240AP format worked well.  (he has played 125 a couple of times)
Finally a huge thank you to Gordon for a great day.

Roll on the next.

Game 4 Sunday Morning

versus Chris Hanley and Huns led by Attila (but not reg)

Had thought about what to do against the Huns overnight and well fed and rested had decided to go against my traditional game style and play for the draw, which would all but guarantee me the competition, regardless of my final game's result.

So we intended to form Fortress Hattusa, hey that's what Hordes are for

I have a map I drew up on Saturday night that bears an uncanny resemblance to the actual battlefield

I was intrigued to see whether Chris would flank March or not - we had played twice before and both times Chris had lost -the non arrival of a flank march being a contributory factor in both games - had this left him physiologically scared

I had a 2FE vineyard on my left - minimising the flank march risk there and a BUA on my right - and some rough going just in front of where my fort was to be built. Chris I assumed had no choice but to launch a full out assault as I was so far ahead in points he needed to thrash me to stand any chance of winning.

I deployed 1 2 3 as norm - but had gone for the changing deployment - which would have allowed me to swap 1 and 2 around - this would have put the Wb in the vineyard - to protect that and keep them out of harms way and swap the Pk(F) with the Kn command providing the power in the centre  unfortunately we both rolled high and it was too late in the day for changing deployment - that was that plan scuppered - back to plan B hold tight and look for an opportunity to counter attack.

The Huns duly deployed 2 deep and yes there was a command missing.

The game started with the Huns piling forward and trying to push some Huns through the Vineyard to get to the Kns exposed flank. I was desperately trying to redeploy my Ps to protect this area but had to be cautious as I didn't know where the other command was.

The game in essence just became a race as to whether the Huns could break in before the 3.5 hrs were up.  The flank march turned up on my right - and rolled the classic 1 -which meant it could only pile forward for 1 - which gave the Anatolian lurking in the rough a chance at the subs rear which he flumped.

The position at this point is as per the picture -
The Hittite priest can be seen calling for reinforcements via the Stargate

the Hittites are slowly going down cannot get to grips with the Huns - and my infantry are being whittled away - and I can't trade 2ME Kns for 1ME Huns -fortunately last bound was called and we had hung on for a 10-15 which left me 15 points clear with 2nd and 3rd due to play each other it was looking good.

I found this the most interesting game in a sense - I chose to corner sit and suffered for it  I was never in control of the game and with more time would certainly have lost probably no more than a a couple of bounds Although I manipulated the terrain to my advantage - the loss of initiative, aggression and control did not sit well with me -which I think speaks well of the rules -even with the terrain stacked in your favour the initiative/impetus is with the aggressor

Game 5 (Sunday afternoon)

And Steve Rathgay and his LAP with inert general

I will not dwell much on this game as Steve is writing up a piece for Slinghsot.

This was very much a race across the table and blow the Persians away 11 points guaranteed me the championship.

I deployed in traditional 1 2 3 formation - Steve deployed back in a box with the Scythed chariots forward on his right.

The LH and Cv(S) were dispatched to take them out lest they become a nuisance to the Kns which they duly did as Steve never had any PIPs to move them and with an inert general they are not impetuous.

The Kn(O)  battered the Kn(I) and Cv(O)  and although Steve's Cv(I) & Cv(O) got a few infantry it was soon wrapped up in a 25-0 Hittite victory   securing the championship by some distance.

This picture shows the situation towards the end - the line of mounted on the baseline are the Persian dead.

Steve deliberately picked this composition because of comments on the list 'not the best I fear' It has a lot of potential this army - low aggression,  all mounted - should get to get best pick of terrain as defender and use its all mounted to deploy second - dont underestimate the Cv(I) use against infantry or LH but dont use them against Kns

So a excellent if draining weekend  - all the results from the Challenge are at http://dbmm.org.uk/forums/index.php?topic=5.0 and look out for Steves article coming in Slingshot.

I enjoyed the competition - although only 6 of us it worked well as everyone played everyone else.  The army performed as expected - In each game  I had the crux of a plan including a rough idea in my head of the battlefield I was aiming to fight on.The terrain aspect is very much a sub game in its own right. A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE BHGS Guys for letting us participate and especially Nik for being list checker - can forgive him the sassanid craggy hill  :)

Would I change the army - probably not - its always tempting to use the Cv(S) instead of the Kn(O) but sometimes that QK is everything.. The Brilliant general was Ok I forgot about it in the game against Chris a real Doh!! Given a couple of times I had been starved of PIPs to try and mount some sort of counter attack against the Huns. Frightening how well LH(S) do against Kn(O) but not unreasonable - now what army do I  know that has LH(S) pref Reg, some Reg Cv(S) a brilliant general, a pip dump, and has a general with some level of 'romance' attached  - every picture tells a story - time for the man on the white faced bay to ride again. ::)

Battle Reports / The Hittites at the Challenge Day1
« on: May 25, 2007, 10:59:53 AM »
This continues from the post on http://dbmm.org.uk/forums/index.php?topic=82.0 which shows the structure and rationale behind the army I took to the Ascot Challenge in April 2007 (the UKs first competition post publication)

Game 1 (Saturday morning)

Versus Late Imperial Roman  Western with Stilicho in attendance

This was against Niall Taylor who I know from many years ago back in the days of Glasgow and District Wargames Society.  Niall was relatively new to DBMM having played twice before at the Ladywood playtest ? Niall had flown down from Peterhead in North Scotland for the Challenge.

The first surprise was it turned out to be a dawn attack by the Romans ? bang goes the changing deployment stratagem.

I deployed in traditional formation 1 2 3

Niall sneaked some Ax around my left flank but didn?t quiet get far enough ? in the post match analysis we agreed he should perhaps have doubled one of his PIPs via a brilliant stroke to get all the way round ? If you have a plan stick to it .

The main point came when he charged my Kn Chariots (forgetting they were Knights)  - IIRC the knights didn?t kill much but the Cv(S) did.

 - the infantry also did well knocking out his auxilia ? the Pike/Wb mix working well ? Previously on the Yahoo DBMM there had been some comments regarding the fact that Ps support don?t pay anything for their support ability ? Now that I have seen it in practice its clear they do ? they die if the guy in front goes so there is a hidden cost (sneaky Phil)

Muwatallis used 2 brilliant strokes in combat to knock out Romans - - the star of the show was a LH(I) who killed a Ps , Kn (F) and Ax(S) with Ps support. Double pay for him.

In the end the Roman crumbled - a win to the Hittites 25-0 and a good start to the competition. I was pleased to play Niall 1st game as this was only his 3rd game of DBMM and knowing him of old he was only going to get better (he didnt disappoint me).

On to Game 2 and an encounter with the 'brick'

Game 2 (Saturday Afternoon)

Versus Gordon Harrow and Sassanid Persian (the brick) - so called as its primary tactic was to barrel straight ahead - such that the opponent felt he was bludgeoned by a brick.

A tricky game this and one with serious history between the players.  An awful lot was at stake.

Gordon's army was well designed - Kavad I 502AD as Brilliant General Stratagems- flank attack and changing deployment    with 2 commands

As Gen Cv (S)
10 x Irr Cv (S)

And 1 Command of
Gen Cv (S)
5 x El(O)
5 x Cv(S)

So only 2ME troops and each command breaks on 8.5 or 5 elements (generals aside) - they dont understand the meaning of disheartened  ;D

I was the invader and Gordon anchored his right flank on a craggy hill - A craggy hill in Persia you cry  :o- yes one that slipped the list checkers net - reports of brown envelopes changing hands on the Saturday morning have been strenuously denied.

I didn't realise the illegality of the hill and it stayed which was fairly key as it stopped my LH(I) terrorising the bricks flank.  However I was to commit an even bigger sin during this game so I can't labour the point.

His 2 Cav commands formed tight columns with a two element wide gap between - on my left

I had chosen changing deployment stratagem (that's one Brilliant stroke) and swapped 2 and 3 as I intended to swing the infantry round the flank of the brick - things didn't go exactly to plan

I advanced quickly to take him on before his flank marched turned up however -

Gordon's 3rd command which I had assumed was flank marching came on around 3rd bound on a 5 which cause me some confusion - had missed that delayed command now came on a 5 or 6 - in play testing it had only been a 6, The elephants motored up the gap (two elements wide and the Cav deployed on his left to counter my rapidly advancing infantry.

First contact went to the Sassanid and some chariots went down. Subsequent bounds saw a lot of recoils and counter charging with the Sassanid slowly gaining the advantage over the left hand Hittite command and breaking it in the penultimate bound. The Hittites whittled off a couple of Sassanid Cav with the aid of some inf wrapping round an exposed flank otherwise the infantry did little else other than glare at the Cv who glared back.

In the final bound the game was hanging in the balance ? casualties were mounting on both sides- the Elephants had been countered by the Hittite CSV(S) chariots who were desperately trying to stop them getting to the Kns

Following a poor dice throw the bound before by Muwattalis in contact with a Sasssanid sub (and on a brilliant stroke) which would have won the game ? the luck swung back. In a series of critical combats the Hittites rolled a couple of good dice with low to average score by the Sassanids to break a Sassanid command and the cumulative -2 took a second command and the game. Nail biting to the end.

Muwatallis twice charged the Sassanid sub general using a brilliant stroke in each case and twice failed - just as well as that now makes 3 brilliant strokes - Oops   :-[

With my chariot command broken it was an 18-7 win to the Hittites.

On to Game 3 and those pesky Romans

Game 3 Saturday evening

Game 3 saw us take on Tony Dennis and his  Marian Romans which comprised the "compulsory" TFd  baggage camp pip dump a large command of Bd(S) with some Bd(O) legionaroies and 2 smaller commands of auxiliaries  and supported German Cav.

There was a large gentle hill on the my left and I finished deployment with commands

3 1 2 (I think I changed deployemnet so may have originally deployed as 3 2 1 ) but this is game 3 and the brain is turning to mush. IIRC I had declared changing deployment as a Stratagem in phase 1 of deployment as I was the defender but Tony had doubled me and he deployed first. Rendering the changing deployment a bit redundant had a quick look at the rules as to whether I still needed to do it as I had declared it and we felt I did subsequently posted to list and we may well have been wrong.

On turn 1 some lovely manouvering by the Romans saw the Bd(S) redeploy (much applause from the Hittites) very impressive but can they fight? we shall see

My chariots the Cv(S and Cv(O) moved forwarded on the left to seize the gentle hill (along with some Horde who actually got to move.) and Tonys cavalry moved up to seize the hill as well   The Knights prepared to charge the blades ? and the infantry and foot auxiliary squared up.

On the left the battle was inconclusive  a Horde nicely held up Tonys outflanking LH and the Cv nibbled away at each other across the hill.

The Hittite infantry slowly wore down the roman auxiliaries but the decisive part of the Battle was the chariots charging the Bd(S)  supported Bd(S) are a tough nut

Once we charged and were repulsed,  again we charged and were thrown back, however the odd Legionary had been nibbled and on the 3rd charge,  the legionaries began to die,  in the end the centre collapsed and the army bolted despite being what felt like a close game a 25-0 to the Hittites.  Dont remember using my second brilliant stroke.  In this game the Knights vindicated their inclusion with the the QK finally paying dividends albeit at the 3rd time of asking.

So we ended Saturday with 68 out of a possible 75 and a solid lead of 24 pts over Chris and his Huns who were due to play next.

Anyway off for a curry, a good nights sleep and back the next day with a cunning plan to defeat the Huns
The trophy was within sight.

To be continued

Battle Reports / Alexander vs Hattusili III
« on: May 20, 2007, 05:14:36 PM »
Early on a spring morning to the south of Hattusa - the army of Alexander of Great commanded by Cameron Mather ( 8 ) faced the Hittite Empire commanded by Hattusili III.

The forces were 137 AP for Alexander and 125 for the Hittites (Cameron had a "free" Brilliant general)

At 06:00 the Syrian Cv(S) and Hittite Kn(O) move forward and the mist disperses revealing the enemy

Alexanders plan was simple - Kill Darius the Hittite bloke in a chariot with the big banner

So both lines rolled forward - the Hittite Scout tried to sneak around but the Cretans were dispatched to stop them - The Agrianes move to take the wood and the Thessalians look to exploit a gap in the line.

Cameron checks out and explains the S grading factors  ;D

Battle is joined as the Hittites charge in - the Gasgan warband cut through the Hoplites and the Companions are thrown back - Alexander pushes forward - fierce fighting takes place for the next couple of bounds - a brilliant stroke the next turn fails to kill the Hittite pike - and a 6-1 by the Gasgans take out a Companion and the Macedonians become disheartened.

A brief success sees the remaining Companions take out the Hittite Kn but the writing is now on the wall

Th Hypaspists are surrounded and wiped out - its now only a matter of time - the Macedonian centre is destroyed along with its left wing and Alexander is now exposed.

The Hittites roll a 6 and surround Alexander with Pk and Gasgan warbands - Alexander is cut down - a crushing defeat 23-2

To be continued ..........

Tactics / Playing with Hittites
« on: May 16, 2007, 01:02:12 PM »
I took Hittite Empire to the Challenge 15mm 400AP  for a couple of reasons  its the only 400AP army I have that is 100% finished and also I had enjoyed using it in playtesting mode as it had a good mix of troop types.

My first use of Hittites (Sep 2004 how time flies) is reported in http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/DBMMlist/message/15640

The army for Challenge after much deliberation (especially over whether to use the Brilliant General - who made it in at the last moment and whether to use the Kn(O) or Cv(S) option) turned out to be as follows

Hittite Empire 1274BC

Command 1

Sub-Gen Reg Kn(O)
6 x Hittite Chariots Kn(O)
2 x Syrian Chariots Reg Cv (S) as per appendix
3 x Scouts Reg LH(I) as per appendix
1 x Anatolian Ax (O)
26.5 ME

The hammer or strike command call it what you want this is the command that is most likely to do the hard fighting and most likely to get highest PIP - the Anatolian may go wide on the flank to prevent marching (and is expendable)

Command 2

Muwatallis c-in-c (Brilliant general Reg Kn(O)
12 x Hittites Pk(F)
12 x Gasgan warbands Wb(F)
1 x Hittite Chariot Kn (O)
2 x Gasgan slingers Ps (O)
28ME

This is the break the other guys infantry in the centre command - the Pikes deploy 3 deep on the flanks and then have warband (4 deep) next to them so the front is

PWPWPWP

Against infantry you are F so should get first charge
Muwatallis helps control the Wb (which the other subs no longer can) and can get them to move short to charge distance on a 1 PIP (if he doubles the dice)

You fight the Pike combats first as these are 5s thus maximising the Wbs chances of taking out 2 ranks (had been using the Hittite spear as Bd(F) for the last year following some postings on YahooDBMMList and TNE but had to revert to Pk for the Challenge)

Against skirmishing mounted this will struggle
the Warband then need to move to the rear and the Pk form up 2 deep and hunker down - hoping the mounted troops in our own army will prove to be the battle winners.

This command is most likely to get the lowest PIP dice as it just keeps moving forward and gets Muwatallis free PIP
No Anatolian as Muwatallis cannot command vassals.

The single chariot Kn is to operate with Muwatallis once the infantry have been successfully delivered as the Infantry all pursue so once they are in they are in - Muwatallis and his "bodyguard" would then look to exploit opportunity in the line - A Kn(O) with a +3 (via Brill stroke) can be decisive (or so I hoped)

Command 3

1 x Sub Kn (O)
3 x Syrian chariots Reg Cv (S)
3 x Gasgan/Anatolian chariots Irr Cv (O)
1 x Syrian archer Ps (O)
1 x Syrian psiloi Ps (I)
13 x Syrian Horde Hd (O)
6 x Hittite Conscripts Hd (O)
1 x Anatolian Ax (O)

27ME

The refused flank or counter attack or just soak them up with the Horde command or flank march and drive your opponent back command

Command 4
6 x Irr Bg (O) (the Stargate handy for reinforcements)
3ME (plus 3 ME to commands 1-3)

Stratagems

Concealed Command as brilliant stroke only
Changing deployment - this was to get the match ups correct - with Ag 2 would be defender around 50% of the time so ability to swap commands was worth the money (so i believed)

That was the army and some rationale about what it was going to do so a low level cunning plan was already forming. The likely deployment was command 1 , 2, 3 and the likely PIP allocation H L M.  Terrain choice would be largely dictated by opponents type - but the infantry would be very comfortable operating in rough terrain.

Will post up battle reports in the next couple of days (hopefully with pics) as to how they faired against their 5 opponents.

David Mather

Saturday saw the first club competition for DBMM in the UK with representation at the National League event hosted annually by Milton Keynes.

Only two teams were present - The Pinner team of David Mather, Dave Pallin and Mark Schofield took on the All Stars team of Alec Harvey, Tony Dennis and Jonathan Crowe.  Mark and Jonathan were relative newcomers to DBMM (in fact it was Jonathan's first actual game).

Over 6 keenly contested games at 400AP with 15mm on a 6' x 4' -the Pinner team emerged victorious by

Pinner 83 All Stars 67

The armies were as follows

Pinner

David Mather - Hittite Empire - 1274BC - Muwatallis
Dave Pallin - Early Imperial Roman
Mark Schofield - Early Byzantine

All Stars

Tony Dennis - Marian Roman
Alec Harvey - Hun (Gepid ally)
Jonathan Crowe - Siamese (Burmese ally)

Round 1 panned out as follows

Hittites 10 Huns 15

The Huns came hard and fast at the Hittite right flank and quickly broke through the Kn chariots - that (S) dont half hurt - and this command soon broke - but the Gepids were broken by the Hittite infantry - the Huns had flank marched on the Hittite right and had a small command in ambush in the large wood (with a Guide stratagem giving them a possible quick exit) but the Hittites never got far enough to trigger the trap.

Muwatallis died surrounded by Huns but the Hittites held on to salvage a losing draw -

Early Imperial Romans 15 Siamese 10

This was Jonathan's first game - his elephants and warbands swept forward and were met by the Roman Auxilia who gradually wore them down - although at the expense of the Auxilia -

Early Byzantine 15 Marian Roman 10

A winning draw for the Early Byzantines - I believe the Roman Bd(S) lost out to the Byzantine Bd(I) :o

So at the half stage Pinner lead by 40 points to 35 - all to play for in the afternoon

Round 2
Hittite Empire 15 Siamese 10

An intriguing game - the Burmese deployed in the centre became unreliable on turn 1 and despite the promotion and slaughter of a couple of Crown Princes refused to take part.

The Hittite chariots swept out of the fields on their left and attacked the end of the Siamese line - after almost sweeping the hostages away and exposing the flank they were unable to capitalise as the Siamese general and his elephant friend carved a wake of chaos through the Hittite chariots - finally breaking the chariot command. Eventually the Hittite pike caught and killed the Siamese general and broke that command  - in the centre nothing much happened as the massed Hittite horde (having seen what the El(O) did I was terrified of the El(S)) stayed the necessary distance away from the Burmese ally.  On the Hittite right an initial success against the Siamese warband and Cav was running out of steam and numbers were beginning to tell as the Cv(S) chariots were slowly wittled away - with both commands on this side disheartened - it was up to the Hittite sub general to charge into some Bw(I) for the 1 Me needed to win the game - although the Hittite body count was large enough to make it just a 15-10.

Early Byzantine 14 Huns 11

This game saw the clash of the 2 Light Horse armies with the Byzantines just shading it when last bound was called -

Early Imperial Roman 14 Marian Roman 11

The clash of the parade ground masters saw the Marians shaded out by their descendents  - some intricate manouevering at the begin before the 2 lines clashed. From Dave's perspective his most glorious moment was his Equites Cohortae Cv(I) taking out two Marian Blade (S) in a single turn and opening a gap that lead to an elephant and another Bd(S) going down. Thus disheartening the second command and giving him the edge 14-11. Victrix Traiano.

With all the games in,  Pinner were declared the winners by 83 pts to 67 pts

Dave and Mark pick up their trophies from Neil Sutherland

and the All Stars - Jonathan, Tony and Alec pose with their runners up awards

All in all a very enjoyable day - with many thanks to the Milton Keynes club for such an pleasant event. - further information on Campaign and the Milton Keynes club can be found at  http://mkws.org.uk

Very little in the way of rules queries - surprising only one game actually got played to conclusion (we played 3.5 hrs plus random 3-18 mins) - very different to the results from the Challenge.

That concludes that for the year - our presence this year should ensure that DBMM will be represented next year - and hopefully more teams will be around to challenge Pinner for the Divisional championship.

Kind Regards

David Mather

Battle Reports / DBMM -Youngest player (Caesar vs Alexander)
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:31:49 AM »
This a an extract from a battle report I posted to the DBMM list site back in January 2007. I have re-posted it here as Cameron was 7 years 344 days at this point and is thus possibly DBMMs youngest player.

The original report is at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/DBMMlist/message/39076

-Fought a DBMM125 game this afternoon between Alexandrian Macedonian and Marian Roman - 25mm 6' x 4'

The Marian Romans were commanded by myself and the Macedonians by Cameron Mather in his first DBMM game (he had played about a dozen DBA games over the previous year).  The army was his Xmas present. (Mine was the digital camera).

We ignored brilliant generals in this case given it was Cameron's first experience of DBMM.

Armies

Alexander
2 x Companions
1 x Thessalian Cav
1 x Thracian LH
1 x Prodromoi
4 x Hypaspists Pk (S)
4 x Phalangites Pk (O)
4 x Hoplites Reg Sp (I)
2 x Agrianes Reg Ps (S)
2 x Cretans
Mes 25
Disheartens 6.5
Breaks on 13

Marian
Julius Caesar
2 x German Cav
2 x Thracian/Moors LH
4 x Legio X Reg Bd (S)
4 x Legio VII Reg Bd (O)
2 x Thurophoroi
2 x Thracians/Illyrian Irr Ax (S)
3 x Germans Ps (I)
Mes 25.5
Disheartens on 6.5
Breaks on 13

Neither side had baggage, as I hadn't managed to get them prepared in time otherwise they would have been first picks in 125.

The terrain consisted of some hills gentle and scrubby scattered round the edges and a gully and an olive grove creating a funnel in the centre

The battle began at 10:00 on a fine spring day in Southern Italy.

The Romans deployed first Legio X in the centre right and Legio VII centre left

The Macedonians deployed second and Cameron lined up the Companions and Alexander opposite Caesar

his aim was to charge the Roman line and kill Caesar (which Caesar was certainly not going to let happen).

I started with 2 1s on the first and second bounds for Pip dice so could do little but move forward - even this was hampered by the change in the Reg Gens rule Caesar could not use his free PIP to move the infantry line forwards because of the Thracian Auxilia being Irregular. (this subsequently changed C-in-Cs now get a free PIP regardless)

There was not much manoeuvre owing to my poor PIPs and Cameron's inexperience and once the fight started the PIPs were drawn into maximising me advantages (overlaps flanks etc).

The two lines clashed on the 3rd bound with the Romans charging the Macedonians ? there was not enough PIPs previous turn for any stopping just out of charge range malarkey.

There was a small skirmish between the light horse on the Roman right flank and a fight in the gully between the German Cav and a Companion. The Macedonians lost the Companion and the Romans their light horse but neither side could capitalise as all PIPs were sucked into the battle in the centre.

Alexander and the other Companion ripped through Legio VII - before the Companion went down front and flank to Legio X  Alexander took out 2 x Bd (O) and 2 x Bd (S). There was a hard fought fight that rolled across the centre with the top troops from both sides breaking through in the middle and then trying to outflank the other. The Romans were first to dishearten with the Macedonians following on next bound - in the end it was a pyrrhic victory for the Romans 75% of Legio VII were dead and 50% of Legio X the Romans took out the Companions and most of the phalanx (front and flank combats).  Caesar himself had to commit himself to attacking the Hypaspists - I rarely put generals into combat
In this case - it was nearing desperation and generals of course are not disheartened.  The Macedonians broke with the Romans only 0.5ME away from defeat themselves (the Macedonians had had a 40% dice roll the previous bound to win the game but failed) Most certainly a "Pyrrhic" victory - 16-9 in game terms.

Comments

Fun   It was a tense close game  I asked Cameron whether he had fun and he replied that he had when further asked what was fun about it he commented that he liked moving the soldiers around and liked killing 12.5 points of Daddy's army and that the Companions were "well cool".

Playability   Taking into account Cameron's age and previous experience I felt this was a triumph for the rules. Whilst he was not fully sure what was going on he still grasped some aspects of the rules (he used the QRS) The my bound your bound split is still a bit beyond him but he was happy calling out the factors and was well aware of the -1 for overlaps etc and the doubling to kill (which are mechanisms of DBA).  He was quickly quite comfortable with S O and I but could not understand what F had to do with it (which I must admit to being amused by). He particularly liked the Companions (especially when he found out they could not be overlapped) and I must admit on the deeper bases they did look good. We played for about 1.5 hours and his attention was maintained during the entire game.

He is certainly keen to play again which is the ultimate accolade especially against Uncle Gordon as if he can get so close to Daddy in his first game.  Uncle Gordon should be a breeze.

Unfortunately we have not got around to playing again (although he has asked frequently) as I have been too busy with other projects (garden etc)  However its bank holiday the garden is all but sorted my "big" Hittites have their paint drying and need a worthy opponent.
TO BE CONTINUED.......
