Rules Questions / Re: Enemy BUA on a friendly hill
« on: June 14, 2011, 11:14:34 AM »
You need to dot between three bits

Placing Terrain features p 21

under point 9 its BUA unless on hill - so a BUA cannot be placed on a hill at this point in the terrain sequence - and this is the only point that you can place a BUA

Bottom of page 21 last para (b) provides the facility to have a hill combined with a BUA

so how

page 19 under BUA half way through the para - if on a hill .... so you have a terrain feature that is a hill with a BUA on it  - hill fort for example - much as any other terrain piece I would expect it to be clear at this point as to what it looked like - eg the BUA in respect to the hill - the dice then determining where it goes

and to answer your next question ;-) - depends on the type of hill

So clear but scattered ;-)

Kind Regards

« on: February 23, 2011, 03:18:57 PM »
We are ahead of the game at the moment - no details up on ilford site - ive sent the DBMM details to them - eventually the details will go up there as to where to send entry etc (I suspect to Pete Cross)

Most paid on the day in previous years
- Ill let you know as soon as - doesnt prevent you from getting your list in

One question someone asked me was whats the board size - same as last year which was the full depth for 240  so 120cm x 90cms or 4' x 3' for the old school

If you say your going then dont I'll send Gordon round to make you an offer you cant understand

Get your list in  - armies are going at a cracking pace

Competitions / RAMPAGE 2011 - Funeral Games - SUNDAY (Tim) 26th June
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:01:19 PM »
You are cordially invited to attend the Funeral Games in honour of Alexander the Great taking place at Rampage on SUNDAY June 26th  see http://www.ilfordwargamesgroup.co.uk/

Following a years mourning armies from his Successors and their key enemies may gather for up to a generation to contest his Funeral Games and to the strongest shall go the ultimate prize.

This will be determined by the usual Rampage rules -3 games will be played on Sunday 26th June using the DBMM v2.0 rules and the appropriate DBMM army lists.

This consists of 3 games using DBMM200 rules ? armies not to exceed 240AP.
Scale 15mm ? games will last 2hrs 20mins + random time up to 12 minutes
Games will stop when time is called and then any combats are carried out.

Individual comp is 3 for a victory 1 for a draw 0 for a defeat - in event of a tie after the 3 games - most wins determines, then total 25-0 score as per the rules.  A victory is defeating more than half the opponents army.  Intention is to encourage fast play and quick decisive games. This also counts towards the Formula 1 Grand prix see http://mkws.org.uk/index.php?id=81 so form  into teams of 3 as well (here scoring will be as normal) - if you haven?t a team don?t worry we will sort something out. This is also a BHGS ranking tournament.
For the purposes of regular ally generals changing sides, no game shall be deemed a civil war.
Army lists are themed around Funeral Games and are detailed below
 Proposed timetable
 Check in 08:45
 First game 09:15
 Second game 12:15
 Third Game 15:15
 Prize giving 18:00ish

The first CORRECT army list sent to the list checker will fill the appropriate slot ? there can thus be only one.
All lists dates and hence options must be between 322 BC - 297 BC.
Lists as soon as to Les Parsons  laparsons@blueyonder.co.uk  (and before 11Th June)
All the applicable armies/slots are at the link below and this will be updated by the list checker as lists are submitted and checked.

Rules Questions / Re: DBMM 100 Generals' cost
« on: June 30, 2009, 02:25:03 PM »
I suspect you are confusing the use of stratagems in DBMM100 with brilliant and inert generals

Brilliant and inert are permitted in DBMM100 -

Stratagems are not permitted in one variant of DBMM100 (there are 2 in the rules)

Milton Keynes Wargames club (UK) run a DBMM100 comp throughout the year which is good fun - check out the details over on http://mkws.org.uk/index.php?id=59

The results of last year http://mkws.org.uk/index.php?id=71 and this year http://mkws.org.uk/index.php?id=93 so far

Its successful enough that people travel to Milton Keynes (which is rare in itself ;)) from as far flung places as Birmingham and the wilds of Kent

One ammendment from the rules (which are stated as guidelines anyway) is that you dont pay for the general (other than his element cost and at reduced value his brilliant or inertness if appropriate)

Reason being as Toby has pointed out there is no advantage in being a Regular general so why pay 5 AP more  - if anyone can work out an advantage please shout.

We currently have a couple of "new" players playing DBMM100 down our club at the moment as that is a good introduction to the game - they certainly seem to be enjoying it anyway.

Kind Regards

General Discussion / Re: 200 ap optimal armies
« on: June 21, 2009, 05:52:07 PM »
William

I have played a lot of DBMM200 - but mainly at 240AP and 25mm on a 6' x 4'

at 240AP I found you could generally use your normal 3 command army and simply half it and round up - this gives you a good feel to how a 400AP version would work - so its a format oft used when experimenting (or time is tight)

Its certainly not a format for the faint hearted as the games tend to be quiick and decisive - teaches you to use your 2ME troops well

Rules Questions / Re: Why are orchards/olive groves so tiny?
« on: March 28, 2009, 12:14:39 PM »
I wasnt talking about scythed chariots in SF rather the elephant expendables from Zama

do they, Hannibals elephants at Zama, treat SF as good going ?

cf baggage camels in D or SF

Do you think the terrain feature should be removed after the scythed chariots leave, because the scythes have cut the plants down? ;-)

Or would that only be with an ambush of scythed chariots out of a vineyard? :-)
[/quote]

Thats from a cornfield - hence good going ;-)

 ;) Hello Dave,

I think ( and could be wrong ) that one can only place 3 1/2's FE, it also seems that one can only place 1 1/2 FE of Orchard, Olive Grove or any size Oasis.

Sort of right sort of wrong  - the important thing is to differentiate between when the rules are referring to cost and when to size

You cannot choose more than 3 1/2 FE sized features (emphasis on choose and size)

In my example as invader i had 2 x 1FE GH and 2 x 1/2 O

I have only chosen 2 1/2 sized features (the Orchards and/or Olive Groves )

I have chosen 2 1FE sized features that COST 1/2 FE each  (shouting for emphasis so apologies ) which are the 1FE GHs

I have thus CHOSEN 2 1 FE SIZED pieces and 2 1/2 SIZED pieces that COST 4 x 1/2 =2 FE

That covers that bit

GHs etc go down we now come to the orchards - I have 2

roll for the first it can be placed so it is - second is discarded as only 1 can be placed

if you fail to place the first you can then try and place the second

If both of us have Orchards then defender gets first bite at the cherry (its a cherry orchard  :D) if that goes down invaders are discarded

You cannot place more than 1 dont believe anything stops you chosing 2

In placing 2 x 1 FE of gentle hills and 2 X 1/2 FE of orchards one is placing 4 X 1/2 FEs ( when one can only place a maximum of 3 ) and there is 1 to many orchards or olive groves.

Any way and further to the point why are you not placing as much marsh as possible to flee the cavalry/light horse into .  ::) or are you ambushing your expendables ?

I used expendables a while back with the Pontics (25mm at Campaign) - i dropped the unusual troops stratagem in favour of ambush - depending on your aggression unusual troops may be 10Ap wasted - the lower the aggression the better it is - with ambush you can get the expendables out onto the wings - angle the terrain piece towards the centre and let it rip

The GHs oft go on the flanks with the O more likely to be off centre -even in 25mm you can still get a couple of scythed chariots safgley tucked up in the orchard - and dont forget Elephants (even expendables) love cherry trees to hide in ;-)

Whilst on the subject of elephant expendables - what speed do they go through SF ?

Of course there was always the issue whether both players can place an orchard, olive grove or oasis, ( I think it was decided both can )

I think they both can pick them but only one gets placed

Norman is due then as well - so chris or norman versus tim or steve

probably

Norman v Tim
Chris v Steve

(as Chris played Tim at Ladywood and a fine game it was to)

Rules Questions / Re: Arrival Surprise
« on: March 27, 2009, 03:30:59 PM »
On a similar theme - check what happens when your flank march rolls a 6 and elects to come on the rear edge

I have a vague recollection of something way back on the yahoolist during development about troops looking forward most of the time and being oblivious to things behind (not having eyes in the back of their heads i suppose) - and being focussed on the threat to the front - we have some degree of peripheral vision to the side.

:) As the defender I like to have some 1/2 fe features, then again I do clutter up the table.

I always use orchards and vineyards if I can use ambushers. 1/2 FE size means that an attacker can lay down 4 pieces of terrain rather than the normal 2 bits, and the more terrain you lay for some armies the better i.e. a foot heavy army vs a mostly mounted one.
As a defender the situation is even better as you can literally swamp the table in terrain favourable to you and hopefully not to your opponent.

But I think that you can only have 3 1/2 FEs, this I think means that as an invader the total number of area featufes you can place is three ( for maximum cover 2x1/2 FEs and 1 FE ).

William I will oft pick 2 x 1FE GH and 2 x 1/2 FE orchard or olive as an invader - i suspect Adrian is talking about something similar (cost and size)

I very often use them

I will pick 2 (but thats coz its slightly cheesy -its an easy way to burn 1/2 FE and I have some nice plum trees and some tree-mendous  :D home made orange trees and olive trees - as Toby will testify  ;)

Being further down the terrain table they tend to go towards the centre making them excellent for small ambushes - (even in 25mm) you can get some scythed chariots in them

as to why that size have a look back around the below (at one point they were linked to fields)
