Flanked?
« on: January 01, 2008, 10:27:28 AM »
Hi again,

Found the following situation yesterday (please see diagram). Two white pike blocks facing downwards. An enemy grey element Sp in corner to corner contact only due to a previous combat. Then a second grey Sp contacts the flank. All three Pk turned to fight but this made the head element being partially contacted on its right flank by the front of the unmoved Sp.

We solved that the Pk block applied -1 by flank contacted but they "still could" recoil", because the Sp was not contacting the whole flank (1- for recoiling prevented was also applied). Was it correct?

Thank you.

Hi

It's hard to visualise without the diagram.  So there was a partial flank contact on the front pikeman?  If I was controlling the Sp, I would have used the free 80 pace movement to move the Sp on the flank into a full flank contact on either all 3 pikemen or at least the first 2, and that way go for the QK on the 2 front pikemen.

-1 for not recoiling is correct if the 3rd pikeman had his back to the other block, and if there was a partial flank contact on the first pikeman I would have played it the same way (I have misplaced my rules so am doing this from memory).  But if the other Sp was only in corner to corner contact with the pikeman (and at 90 degrees to the Sp who was fighting) then I don't think it is an overlap or a flank contact.

Just my opinion...
Andrew

Andrew's point is a good one. I would say that the flanking spear could slide along to make full contact using the 80p free move, even thought the turn to face comes after the end of the movement phase.

I like th diagrams - they make things much easier.
