Quick army list query
« on: January 11, 2011, 02:06:44 PM »
Hi all

In the Polybian Roman army list it states that you can take 0-3 Italian Allied Cavalry elements per Roman Cv(O).

Do the Generals (who are Romans and are Cv(O) elements) count for this purpose?

... or do I have to take a separate Roman Reg Cv(O) element to be able to field any Allied Cav?

Cheers

I reckon that you can take 0-3 Italian Cv per general as well, since they are Roman Cv(O) (as you say). It does mean that the Romans can end up with a rather unrealistic number of cavalry though...

Cheers Toby

I was thinking of 'instead' rather than 'as well' as.

So in a dbmm100 army for instance I could field one General (Cv(O)) and then a couple of Allied Cv(I)....but no Roman Cv(O).

Erm, not sure - I don't have Book 2 to hand so can't remember the list.

From memory though, the Roman Cv(O) are compulsory in a ratio with the Bd, so you would need to take at least one Roman cavalry element (or more depending on how many Legionaries you have).

The Italian cavalry are then 0-3 per Roman Cv(O), so assuming that you have 1 Roman Cv(O) C-in-C and 1 Roman cavalry Cv(O) you could have 0-6 Italian Cv(I) (unless you are post 211 BC at which point they all have to be Cv(O)).

Hi Toby

You are right - normally Roman Cav are 1 per 8-12 Bd.

The issue has arisen in dbmm100 games where the mininum amount of Blades is halved to just 4 elements.

So if you take between 4 to 7 blades then you can't field an element of Roman Cav - and therefore unless you count the Cv(O) general, you can't field any Allied Cav either.

Its not a big issue as I have been mostly playing 400AP battles of late but on occasion we do have a dbmm100 evening so I have been counting the general and fielding one additional allied Cv(I) element in addition. I guess as long as my opponents don't object then all is well in the Republic.

If the minimum is less than 1 element in DBMM 100, do you not round up to 1?

And wouldn't the halving process result in the number of Roman cavalry being "0.5 per 4 blades"?

The ratios don't get halved as well do they? Otherwise Later Romans with 0-1 Ps(O) per Ax(S) would only get 0-1 Ps(O) per 2 Ax(S), changing the character of the army.

I though the minimum number of Blade was 16 anyway, so would become 8, which isn't a problem.

If it were 8, which would halve to 4, and the ratio was 1 per 8-12 Blade then I guess you would be stuck with a minimum of 1 Cv(O) (kind interpretation) or a minimum of 8 Blade (less kind interpretation). In a Polybian Roman army this seems appropriate anyway - you should have a lot of Blades.

The way i read it is,only element min and max get changed, ratios would stay the same?So Polyian Roman blade would change to 4-28.If you only take 4 Bd elements would that stop you from using any Cv(O) and Sp(S),as these are both per 8-12 blade?Maybe the 100 pts rules need a bit of tweeking. :)

That is correct, but for DBMM 100,the min is reduced to 1/4 rounded down, and the max is reduced to 1/2 rounded up.
