Sure, but I have the option of moving my columns straight ahead only and then contact an enemy corner.

Of course this is possible for a tactical move, but "a spontanious advance must be the full permitted tactical distance, except that the element or column... immediately pivots around the point of contact to end parallel to an enemy it meets." So a spontanious element must pivot.

So the only way your problem could occur is when you made tactival moves with the left and right columns and let the middle column go spontaniously. In that case I think you handled it correctly. Its a legal move because the move would only be cancelled if the blocking elements were friendly and not in close combat.
