DBMM in Spain
« on: December 20, 2008, 04:12:09 PM »
I would like to have some informations about DBMM in Spain.
I had some news (misty origin) that DBMM is dead over there, but looking at club numbers reality seems quite different.
Do you have a championship?

Hi Lorenzo,

No, DBMM is not dead in Spain...as far as I know  ;D. The situation here is not as good as in the UK, I'm afraid (I don't know if it's good there, but it's much better than here, believe me). Here FoG has become the new standard for comps. More than 70% of former DBM players changed to the misty rules. The other 30% are playing to differnt rules systems. Nowadays our community is around 30 players sparsed in 4 clubs. As you can see it's a too little community to organize a competition. We must remember that In Spain less than 10% of DBM players participated in international tournaments; this means that no more than 3 players would be interested in it. As you can see in my personal blog (in my signature and in Spanish, sorry), I'm trying to create a self confident local community here, but it's not an easy work. DBMM is seen a bit like the son of the former tyrant trying to succeed his father :(.

I think year 2009 will be a no return point. I am going to dedicate as much time as possible to ensure a strong local community next year. If I fail, i will quit. A misty friend of mine told me that no one can sail against strong winds. I have been doing it since feb 2007, and I'm a little tired. Next year is going to be my last year sailing in strong winds. I will try to consolidate a three or four local DBMM events. If they are successful, then we ill be able to talk about international comps in Spain in 2010, not before. Only a few  of us are trying to support a stil wavering community, so it's too early to talk about moving abroad.

I can give you a more personal report if you send me a personal email, I wouldn't like to depress all other forum readers with our survival efforts here!  ;)

Thank you very much.

IMO participation in international events is of no importance - we probably have about 30 "regular" DBMM players here in NZ butsome of them only play occasionally - but that's enough to keep going as far as I'm concerned - even if only a few of them are local to me.

the "secret" to continuing is to just do what you can and not trying to become a DBM replacement overnight - as long as you can get a handful of local tournaments, regularly play at your local clubs/gatherings (which doesn't mean every week, but as often as possible) and "show the flag" while enjoying yourself then you will get people coming to play - just a few...but it feels good when they do!  ;D  I recently had 2 guys here ask me for a game who'd been playing FoG for ages & hadn't played DBMM since the playtest versions.... they "now" prefer DBMM, having played FoG because most of the 15mm players adopted it......

DBMM is primarily 25mm here....but because of this guy & a couple of others, plus people with armies in both scales, we might have 6-8 people able to play 15mm locally - about as many as 25mm (some play both).

DBMM is picking up here - slowly - and it doesn't matter how few games I play I plan to enjoy all of them!  :)

So IMO forget about how many people play other rules - they are not important - be good to the people who do play DBMM - cater for what they want as far as possible, and let the gospel ring out the truth....er.....I mean - just enjoy what you have :)

I have no problem in sailing against the wind as long the ruleset I play is the one I like, and this is what happens with DBMM.
30 players are many: I would start organizing a couple of events to let the two biggest clubs meet each other. Having more games with new opponents is just positive.

Yes, this is what I want to do. As Mike says, the most important thing is consolidating a stable number of players, not a huge number. I play almost every week, and I'm dedicating A LOT of time to teaching others. This is IMHO the mos remarcable flaw of DBMM. The current text is an important barrier for newcomers  :(.

As I said in my previous message, 2009 can be a good year (in relative terms) for DBMM in Spain. Then, in 2010, make me this same question again and we will see... ;)

Hm ... we in Germany would be glad, if we had 30 regular players ...

We still have quite some guys who play WRG 6th.
We even have a few who are sticking to DBM.
Some more seem to play FoG (for the time being it is difficult to state how many, cause there wasn't a tournament yet)
But funny enough ... those who were involved in the German version of FoG don't seem to like it ...

We had two small DBMM-Events sofar, the next will be in February ... and at least two more to come later in 2009.
Nevertheless we are confident about the future ...
We are supporting DBMM in a forum with rule discussions and battle-reports ... and more people will have access to the game when we will have a German translation ...

A German translation?  :P We asked for permission for a Spanish one and we were simply ignored? Did you contact Phil himself or Caliver Books?

Thank you.

I was in touch with Toby Partride and we had Phil's OK.
But Caliver never answered neither to Toby nor to me ...  ???
