DBMM v2 at Wintercon
11-12 June 2011

The Road Less Travelled

Sponsored by Olympian Games

The Canberra Games Society is organising the Wintercon games weekend over the June long weekend 2011 to fill a gap in the Australian games calendar. Part of this event will be a 2 day, 4 round DBMM competition.

Wintercon will be held at EPIC (the same venue as for Cancon).

The DBMM competition will be a 15mm event with the theme The Road Less Travelled. Players are strongly encouraged to use armies they have not previously fielded in DBMM competitions. To encourage the use of less popular armies, a variable AP format is being used:
-   Popular tournament armies are limited to 385AP.
-   Less popular tournament armies are limited to 400AP.
-   Armies which have seen little or no tournament use are limited to 415AP.

All armies have been assigned to one of these categories based on information on the DBMM ratings page.

Lists of armies in each category are below.

Organiser: Peter Barrett (peter DOT barritus AT yahoo DOT com DOT au).

Competition details:

-   Rules - DBMM v 2 with latest version of the Commentary (available here).
-   Armies to be selected from DBMM list books 1 to 4, with a date from 3000BC to 1515AD.
-   4 rounds of between 3h 30m and 3h 45m, starting at 9.00am and 1.30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
-   Please bring your own terrain (and tablecloth if you have one); there will be a prize for best terrain.
-   Please submit your list to SAAW_list_checker AT yahoo DOT com DOT au by Friday 3 June 2011. Lists submitted after this date will be available for checking by your fellow players.
-   When submitting your list, please write 'Wintercon DBMM' in the subject line, and please include your real name in the body of the email.
-   The draw in the first round will be by army date, with every attempt to prevent interstate players from playing someone else from their state. After that, the draw will use the Swiss Chess system.
-   Unfinished games will end with dribble stop (stop all movement immediately, then complete distant combat and close combat).
-   Count-back resolution will be (1) size of players' armies (smallest wins), (b) result between players, if they played (higher scorer wins), (iii) sum of opponents' scores (higher total wins).

On reflection, I've made a small change to the countback provisions, to reward people who are brave enough to field smaller armies.

There will be one little change to the DBMM rules for Wintercon, but it has a few implications.

The rule change is that civil wars will not be recognised as a means of making an unreliable command change sides.

At the bottom of page 14, in the 3rd paragraph of Unreliable Allies, it says:
Quote
Until it has been established that he is reliable...if any of his side's commands became broken last bound and no enemy command is broken...If...the two armies are of the same nation, existed at the same period and their army list specifies them as possible enemies, this his command will change sides and become a reliable enemy ally command.
Ignore that option.

For Wintercon, only irregular allies of a different nation will be able to change sides.

What this means is:

- Obviously, a lot of unreliable allies won't be able to change sides (so Brutus won't desert Cassius for example, nor will Gallic and Early Crusader allies desert their respective Commanders-in-Chief); and

- Less obviously, the baggage of an ally command which can't change sides can be included in Army Baggage (see Baggage on page 9).

If you have any questions, please ask here.
