Can they do group moves like contractions and turning into column? I get the impression that the rules try to force players into the position of doing little else with expendables than moving them straight forward, but at Wintercon one player in particular was marching them all over the place in his efforts to get them in front of enemy Kn.

You may be thinking of the single element moves restriction.  Page 28, first bullet point : "A ... move by a single element can be in any direction ... except that Expendables ... can only move in the direction they are facing or change direction by a pivot or wheel of 90 degrees or less, or a turn of 180 degrees."

No such restriction applies to group moves by Expendables on page 29.
