Question about allied Bg
« on: November 04, 2012, 04:26:42 PM »
Dear all,

Can an allied contingent taken from a sub-list (own list unexisting) buy Bg from the main list? Maybe I should ask if they can buy any Bg at all. I find no rules banning it, but I'm not a Phil-ologist  ;D

Any help would be appreciated

You're talking about troops who are listed indented in a main list, like Nepalese allies in a Tibetan army?

If so, I note that some such examples include baggage in their sub-list. The Nepalese are one such example. On that basis, I assume that if the sub-list doesn't include baggage they can't take any baggage, unless some note in the sub-list indicates otherwise.

But it's an unclear situation. For example, the Byzantine allies in the Early Crusader list aren't indented, while the Spanish allies in the Medieval German list are. As neither the Byzantines or Spanish are provided with baggage, are we supposed to draw any conclusions from the presence or otherwise of indents?

Likewise, I asked in the Book 4 errata thread whether the Serbian vassals of Ottoman Turks are entitled to regular baggage.

Finally, I laughed when I saw the word Phil-ologist. Do you know that a philologist is someone who studies languages? Rather appropriate when studying Barkerese... :-)

Thanks for your response. I am talking about French and English allies in the Medieval Spanish list (book IV). Basically I agree with your interpretation but I wanted some other opinions.

I read the word Phil-ologist somewhere (I don't remeber right now) but I decided to include it in my DBMM daily vocabulary for obvious reasons  ;D

I might be guilty of that one, I refered to Lawrence Greaves as a Phil-ologist on a thread here a while ago.

Anyway, on the substance, the list clarifications have this to say on indented allies and baggage:
Quote
Indented allies and baggage
There are a number of allies specified specifically indented sub-lists, e.g. Thai allies in Khmer and Cham and Ostmen allies in the Norse Irish list. Such contingents may only use baggage as specified in the sub-list.

As for non-indented allies (Turcoman in Khwarizmian, say), I presume they can take baggage from the normal allowance. I'm not aware of anything to suggest they work any different, wrt army structure, than allies of the same nation.

There might be a problem with restrictions along the line of "commanding all and only Turcomans" however - the Khwarizmian list does not explicitly label any baggage as Turcoman, so none can actually be in the Turcoman general's command, and as they, I presume, count as foreign allies, they can't pool baggage in the army baggage command either.
