Early Macedonian allies (for LHG Athenians)

How do you create an ally contingent from this list?

Specifically, can you - or must you - include the pezhetairioi?

The thing is Macedonian hoplites are optional in the main list (0-20). And according to the ally rules, optional troops can't be included in an ally contingent unless list notes say otherwise (and there aren't any such notes for the Early Macedonians).

But upgrading Macedonian hoplites to pezhetairioi is compulsory after 498BC (4-16, or 1-5 in an ally contingent), which means they must be used in an ally contingent.

So what do you do when a given troop type appears to be both compulsory and forbidden?

The army has to contain upgraded pezhetairoi so upgraded pezhetairoi are compulsory. Hence must also be in an ally contingent.

It doesn't have to contain unupgraded pezhetairoi so they are not compulsory. Hence cannot be in an ally contingent.

In general if the parent army has to have them, an ally contingent also has to have them. If it doesn't have to have them then an ally contingent can't have them. (But NB an optional upgrade does not prevent you from taking the base type.)
