dicing for deployment
« on: July 15, 2007, 10:55:40 PM »
Can someone clarify this as had several arguments regarding deployment.
How many times do you dice for deployment??  Page 18 gives order of set up sequence then describes dicing for Aggression.  Page 22 describing deployment: "(2) Each army dices for deployment."
Does this mean dicing for aggression then separately again for deployment; which doesnt seem to make sense.  My impression is only one dice roll then taking the raw scores to determine weather and time of day.  ???

There are 2 dice rolls - firstly for who is invader/defender and season (page 18).  This one uses the agression values for each army.

Secondly for who sets up first and weather per page 22.  This one is a straight die roll unless either side is antirely mounted as defined.

is it right to assume whomsoever rolls higher deploys second on the second die roll?

And what if the second die roll is a tie?

No - Having previously established who is invader and who is defender (Aggression Dicing page 18) - and having drawn deployment maps - Initial Deployment p22 section (1)

You now establish who deploys first as per section (2)

If the invader scores double or more then they will deploy first
If this is not the case the defender deploys first

The dice roll may be modified by all mounted armies inc Ps or Bg (F)

If you need to dice a second time because the raw scores were a draw eg 3-3 - then it is this roll that counts - the subsequent roll is only for time of day

So in a 3-3 the defender will deploy first

Now carry out steps 3, 4 and 5

- you know now - who is invader/defender - who is deploying first, the time of day and weather effects

Armies are on table

all that is left to establish is who takes first bound - in the majority of games this will be the person who deployed first - there are exceptions (as ever) on p 26
Sequence of Play near top

An inert C-in-C always moves second

If there is a visibilty issue where it is less than 400p (as established under time of day/weather)  eg night, mist, fog etc then the invader will take first bound

It makes sense to me. If you do everything with a single dice roll, you know the possible weather effects before you start deploying. In those days when the reliability of the Bureau of Meteorology was somewhat less than it is now, generals had to make the decision to risk battle before they knew what the weather would be like on the day of battle.

This way, the players work out who's invading and have to plan their deployment, before they know whether there's going to be a risk of rain. Not pleasant, but those were the risks generals took in those days. (Mind you, not that many games hinge on the weather.)
