Flank attack stratagem
« on: January 12, 2008, 03:19:40 PM »
Quick question,

A Flank attack stratagem is just a common flank march (so it must be specified on your deployment map)except that the Brilliant C-in-C must spend a brilliant stroke in order to to get it on the table dicing 5 or 6 (after the 4th own bound 4,5 or 6). Is this correct?

But what happens if it gets into the table before spending the brilliant stroke? Does the C-in-C have its 2 brilliant strokes yet?

Thank you.

Hi,

Flank attack is a Stratagem and must be one of the (up to) 5 stratagems listed in your OB. At stage 1 of Deployment you must choose (up to) 2 of them. If you choose Flank Attack, then you have used up one brilliant stroke.

The take-home message is that you have used the brilliant stroke by specifying the Stratagem, not by throwing the 5 (or 4).

It's on p15 BRILLIANT OR INERT GENERALS. "A brilliant stroke can be used to specify a stratagem..."

Another interesting fact about brilliant generals is that they can't average their commands die.

Hi,

p15, BRILLIANT OR INERT GENERALS, line 9.

Note it says he can't averahe _his_ command, but others in his army can, So if you have a Brilliant CinC, you can give him the highest or lowest dice and average the others, but you can't average his command with any others.

He can take a middle dice if he wants to too - it doesn't have to be high or low.

Note also he can't change orders except by a brilliant stroke - that might be intersting - you'd better plan for him to do well!! :)

Nope - same place as it says he can't average his own PIP dice - page 15, end of para 1.

I only realised it when I was checking the message above that they couldn't average their own PIP dice - I hadn't realised that either until then.....not sure I want to use Briliant generals so mcuh now!!  :-\

How about this: You give the Brilliant general the middle dice, and the other two commands average the highest and lowest PIP dice. There's nothing in the rules limiting which PIP dice get averaged, except that it can't include a Brilliant general's PIP dice.
