Crossing Temporary Fortifications
« on: December 17, 2008, 06:56:50 PM »
Played a game the other night where my Early Imp Roman cavalry decided to try and cross some undefended Temporary Fortifcations which they did with total ease. Is it right that they use their nomal combat factor of 4 against the undefended TF of 2 with no other tactical factors playing a part? It just seems strange that my Roman Auxilia Cavalry while mounted are better at crossing such an obstacle (dich, palisade, wagon lager etc) then my Auxila Infantry.

Ca't see anything that says you did it wrong - perhaps they were able to get over easier by standing on their horses!!  ;D

Or maybe a small glitch in the rules ;).....are you on the list?  If not I'll post it on your behalf.....

Dont forget foot get a tactical bonus for assaulting PF/TF, as long as they are in two ranks deep, and the second rank does not have to be the same as the front rank i.e first rank could be Ax, second rank Ps(O). Mounted don't get this bonus. So, Ax factor will also be 4.

Mike - Yes, I'm on the list so perhaps will post it on there as well.

VV - I accept and understand the 2nd rank support for foot. It still seems strange that Auxilia are not as good as mounted when crossing the obstacles and even need a second rank to help them ???

On that note Psiloi would have it the easiest of all for getting over/under/around TF.....

You played it right.

I know mounted can attack TF, but can they actually cross it after attacking it?

I'm not sure I'm following you.  An undefended TF that is attacked and loses is removed and replaced by a strip of DGo (page 11).  Anything that can enter DGo can move through the gap in subsequent bounds.  On page 42 if you beat an undefended TF you must advance into the space vacated, beyond the TF.  This then raises an interesting question about how far does a long based element pursue?  If the length of the element base (e.g. Chariot, Elephant etc.) is longer that the width, does that mean it follows up it's base length if it beats an undefended TF?
