Being unable to recoil from the flank?
« on: January 13, 2009, 04:11:06 PM »
;) This came up in a game recently and as we did not know what to do we ignored it as it did not effect the result.

Element A is contacted frontaly by enemy element X, and to the flank by element Y, Y is unable to recoil ( terrian, troops or table edge not allowing a recoil ), does X take a -1 modifier for the combat because Y can not recoil ?

No - read the modifier again - it is only if there are such troops in contact with the REAR edge.

note that trops in contact with your flank do not actually prevent a recoil - the combat results are different from DBM.

Now there is a series of default combat results which reads (more or less...) - destroyed if beaten and with enemy element front edge in contact with your flank or rear, otherwise recoil (unless one of the exceptions listed).

this is quite different from DBM where the combat result was "recoil if beaten", and then under "Recoil" it said (something like) an element cannot recoil if it starts with an enemy element in front edge contact with it's flank or rear edge.

So in DBMM the destruction is not a conversion of a recoil result as with DBM.

I understood the question to be:

Quote
X is in frontal combat with an enemy element A
Y is a friend of X in contact with A's flank
If X loses the combat, Y would have to recoil, but...
Troops or terrain in contact with Y's rear edge would prevent it recoiling.

Does X get a -1 because a friendly elementinvolved in the combat cannot recoil due to something in contac with its rear?

The answer to that would be

Quote
No, X only gets the -1 if there are troops or terrain blocking a recoil in contact with the rear of X.
Similarly, X does not get a -1 or -2 if Y is in bad terrain.

Yeah my mistake sorry - it is only the elemnt that has the enemy front edge in contact with it that takes the -ve factor.
