Marshes by rivers

A quick question about the terrain placement rules.

The rules state that the only terrain which can be used must come from the defender's terrain list, except that it's possible to place dunes by seas and marshes by rivers, even if those terrain types aren't in the arny's terrain list.

Assuming I choose such a marsh, having also chosen a river, how does the placement process work? I assume I roll the normal two dice, but what happens if they specify the terrain piece has to go somewhere away from the river? Do I get to roll again, or is it just bad luck?

Cheers

The wording is that it can be used "if this is placed next to..."

Not "is placed next to ... if it is used"

so I would say you roll for placement, if you place it next to the river then you can use it, if it is not placed next to a river etc then you can't place it.

An interesting tactic if you want open terrain might be to choose a marsh and not a river etc, though this might lead to an umpire call.
