Please look at the picture. Two friendly Kn elements are looking up and an enemy elephant pursued after destroying an element from the left, so it's looking right. As you can see, after pursuing its base depth a partial flank to enemy front edge contact is made. According to 2.0, now contacts made after pursues must be solved applying lining up rules on page 33. Could you please confirm then that this contact cannot be made? Flanks cannot be moved into enemy front edge contact unless the friendly front edge moves into combat too. What option would be applicable?

a) The element cannot pursue at all.
b) It pursues until front corner to front corner contact only.

I would bet for the second, but other opinions would be appreciated.

This was my first thought, but that would happen if the group had contacted the elephant, but this is the opposite situation. The moving element is the single one, so I understand that the rules on page 33 for a single element moving should apply. Otherwise both players could argue about who should line up to who depending on their preferences. Being the oone moving into combat, as is how I read it, preferences dissappear.

Only MOVING elements now get the EMTLU, which I think is a big improvement.

So the elephant conforms to the Kn on the left.

True, but EMTLU is possible if a previous legal move has been made. And this is not a legal move.

I think the pusuit is compulsory, legal and ends up with a sensible result.

However, if the El only just reaches the Kn then the 80p EMTLU will not be sufficient to line up and I guess the El just remains there with its side edge touching, say, 2mm of Kn front edge.

I think this is the hey factor. I agree that pursuits are compulsory. The question is whether they must be finished or not. I disagree that it is a legal move. A flank cannot contact an enemy front as per page 33.  Was this considered in the last playtesting?

Interesting...But as Neil is pointing out, there's not enough distance to make a full EMTLU, so it can't line up at all, so it must stop at corner to corner contact. Well, I think we finally got it!

Dear all, I think I finally got it  The key word on page 33 is "voluntarily". You must obey p.33 restrictions if you voluntarily contact an enemy. Elephants (as well as impetuous) never can choose to pursue or not so they are not compelled to contact as per p.33. This means that the contact on the first message of this thread is completely legal.

Phil is right after all. A careful reading of the rules should solve all doubts.
