Sorry this is late in coming as someone asked me to do a report on Camillan Roman Warwagons ath the Oxford challenge 2015.
So here is a sketchy report on them
Warwagons all deployed in subs command with 8 Hastati, 8 leves and 2 each Reg Cavalry I and O. ME 24
CinC: RCvO, 8 SpS, 8SpO; ME 32
Other Sub: RAxS, 8 PsI (Rorari) and 16 AxO; ME 20
Bg: 6RBgO, 8TF.
So day one. According to notes weather made no difference to any games
Game 1 vs Patsys. Invading
2 x GH, RH had something to do with game but the Rd helped the patsies most of all. SF and V took no part in game.
Deployed WWg expanded in group. Outmaneuvered they never made combat - should have split them. Bad deployment of Spear cost me a loss of 0- 25.
Game 2 Vs Chin Chinese. Invading.
Deployed Sea. Chin deployed BUA on my right. Rd,RF made no diff
Expanded WWgs hit BwO and killed a few. Caused Wb delay. Sp caused enough casualties to win 15-10 another few minutes and another 1/2 ME casualty would have had 25-0 win. Good job War wagons.
Game 3 Vs Adrian Clarke's Alammani. Defending.
Lots of terrain spread across table including sea on right flank
WWgs deployed in column to protect flank sector. should have been used more aggressively for this one. Bw faced my Sp with Wb behind, Wb went sponno though Bw into SpS and O eventually breaking command and close to breaking army. Front Wwg made contact and fought at -1 it was eventually destroyed tho did delay something?
Reg BgO kept me in this game much longer. Amusingly Adrians BtsO attacked my Baggage+TF on the beach. Crewed by topless African girls (Allamani?) they attacked the baggage occupied by Topless Egyptian pot girls (well possible) who managed to drive them off several times. (What were we thinking?) Included with my baggage was an old elephant keyring i converted for DBMM. Painted it an unusual pink colour apparently pink elephants do exist especially when drunk.
With seconds to go it looked like a 10-15 loss but extra minutes were given and my Ax command went and i was toppled 0-25. Damn!
Day 2. - Weather no difference again
Just 15 points on table something had to give. Less notes taken on day two -
I remember my baggage survived another onslaught protected by TF. This time the Baggage Elephant drove off a Lh attack.
So again taking Reg BgO protected by TF kept the Camillans in the game longer by increasing the overall ME.
Game 4 vs Thracians. Invading summer. My Rd fell on my base edge to right edge. My V in the rd's triangular area.. A GH , RH and RF took part in game
War wagons deployed in column blocked a flank protecting SpS/O. Sp were left out of 2/3 of game which was a waste. My Ax and Ps got beat by opponents Ax and Ps. Can't remember much else as i didn't take many notes. Tho i did lose 0-25. Wwgs made no difference in this game.
Game 5. Vs Galatian. Defending. deployed V, GH, DH and O
WbS! lot of them! WWgs on my right flank. On last game sketched map and set up but nothing about battle against 40+ WbS and lots of psiloi supported by Cv it was another disaster. The result must have been 10-15 since i had 25 points to show for comp at end.
With a few minutes extra or less in a few games i would have left with more points on the table still bottom half but not bottom.
If asked if i would take WWgX again i would but split them in different commands. It is good to have them in contact with something as they cost nothing if lost. Opponents also avoid them as they can be a waste of time fighting. Next time may think about using Camillans as Polybians. My Baggage Elephant would make a nice African El(i).
