Nikephorian DBE wedge (28mm)
« on: November 28, 2009, 03:20:49 AM »
Looking to getting my Nikephorians off the shelf, re-based to DBMM and am a little puzzled about the specifications for the super heavy cavalry DBE/s.

Draft 1.1 notes "Double-based Knights, instead of 2 rows of 3 25mm or 15mm figures, can be in a wedge with 1 each of 2 and 4, or interleaved rows of 1, 2 and 3.  28-30mm can have interleaved rows of 1 and 2".

The List specifies a 2/4 wedge but this does not work for 28mm - my question is about "interleaved rows of 1 and 2" and what this means for basing purposes.    Grateful for clarification, thanks.

No idea :)

I have my Gripping Beast kataphractoi (who are on the bulky side) based with two fully armoured men at the front and three at the back, the middle one of whom is a less well armoured archer. I'll post a photo tomorrow if I remember. The two and three formation means that the heads of the rear horses can fit in the gaps between the front horses.

I think interleaved rows of 1 and 2 probably means two at the back and one between them but with the nose further forward.

IMO any formation of figures that is narrower at the front than at the back would be acceptable.

Many thanks for the advice - I thought about the 2/3 option as well and this looks like the go.  I was wondering how the 1/2 option differs from say a Macedonian single element wedge?

I have a mix of figures - Gripping Beast SHC with maces for the front and Hinchliffe lancers for the rear.  Looking in the spares box I have some Citadel horse archers on armoured horses as well as Old Glory horse archers on a half armoured horse.

Using my TARDIS I came across Phil's SHC wedge article in an ancient Slingshot - the one where we have something like a baker's dozen in the unit!
