Flee move in more than one type of going.

This question came up in a game today.

How far does an element of Auxilia flee, if he is more than 200 paces, but less than 240 paces in the direction he is fleeing, from the edge of difficult going?

"A flee move ....is a full..move.. for the going in which it starts".

So if LH flee from the open into woods, they move as if the whole move was in the open.

I assume you start in the open, though you stated so.
Ax move 200p and flee an additional base depth (40p), making a total move of 240p.
(It?s a bit tricky specifying how far the move is, see P62 for example)

I retired for the evening last night and realised I completely mis-worded my question.

I was thinking 'rout' but typed 'flee' in error.  Also the Auxilia was in the difficult going.  Sorry about that! :)

If an Auxilia is in difficult going and must rout (his command broke and he wasn't halted), he turns to face his rear edge and must then move double distance.  Is this measured as 1 double move or two separate moves?  The reason I ask is because the first half of the move meant he remained in the difficult going, but the 2nd half of the move got him out of the difficult going.

From memory a rout is a like a flee so is this a case of moving twice the difficult going move?

The best solution to this problem is to avoid allowing your troops becoming demoralised and routing.
 ;)

It says a rout move is twice the distance of a normal move.
So I would read this as the move distance in difficult terrain times two.

Agree 100% - unfortunately sometimes these events are out of ones control!  To put it into context, it wasn't a difficult decision to push my mounted General into the back of a bow element, rather than halting a broken Ax element in DGo.....needless to say the General won his combat....being the final combat of significance for his command.

Agreed.  Another thing we didn't quite get right in the heat of the battle.......
