This website is an unofficial official website for the De Bellis Magistrorum Militum (DBMM) set of ancient wargaming rules, written by Phil Barker and published by Caliver. When I describe it as unofficial I mean that the site and any of the opinions expressed on it are by no means endorsed by either Phil Barker or Caliver. When I say that it is official, I mean that there isn't a more official version out there for you to find.

Linked from here, you will find various other web assets for DBMM. The largest of these, although possibly a little daunting for the unwary is the Yahoo Group for DBMM. This is the main development forum for DBMM, but be warned, the signal to noise ratio can be quite low and the debates can get pretty heated. If you raise something on there and get flamed, its probably not really aimed at you - the issue has almost certainly been raised before and people will assume that you are trolling.

More gentle, especially for the new player is the DBMM Forum. This is moderately well categorised and people tend to be a lot politer in answering questions on here.

There is also a link to the DBMM Wiki, maintained by Rob Brennan, which contains a useful repository of errata, battle reports, sample army lists etc.

Version 1.1 PDF Print E-mail

Phil has now publicly started work on version 1.1 of the rules. The initial remit for this was to tighten up areas of ambiguity, correct a couple of errors and address one or two areas where there were frequent complaints about play balance - most notably Regular Train PIP-dumps and single elements of non-skirmishers blocking marching.

The latest drafts of the 1.1 rules should be obtained from the DBMM Yahoo Group (you will need to join to gain access to the Files section) - I won't be publishing them here for copyright reasons obviously.

So far most of the clarification and ambiguity areas seem to have been dealt with fairly well and the main points of contention are, as always, marching and baggage. Marching proposals are being tested at the moment - the current draft allows any group that is not in a column to march straight ahead withing 400 paces of the enemy, with combat penalties if you march into contact. After some initial resistance to the idea, a growing number of people are testing it and reporting that it actually works quite well, except when ranged shooters are involved, so that is the focus of effort at the moment.

Baggage will change, but the exact nature of that change is on the back burner at the moment, so don't pester Phil about it. When marching is sorted, the time will come to sort baggage.

The aim is to get v1.1 finalised before a new print run of the rules is required, which looks like being next spring.

Book 4 Lists PDF Print E-mail

Now that Books 1, 2 and 3 of the army lists have been converted to DBMM and revised in the list of the latest historical research and opinion, Book 4 is under the spotlight. Much work has been done and the latest drafts can be found, as always, in the Files section of the DBMM Yahoo Group. Most of the straightforward conversion is done and there are now just the more contentious changes to be addressed, including the horror that is the Mediaeval German list. Phil has resisted pressure to split this into multiple lists but hopefully improved formatting will be able to make something more comprehensible in the absence of the perfect solution.
